He attended Huntington Beach High School and was a top basketball and football player. Gonzalez excelled in these sports at the University of California, Berkeley. He helped lead the football team into the 1996 Aloha Bowl, where he set a record for the school bowl by catching nine times. After a few months, Gonzalez led the basketball team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament. After graduating from high school He was a participant in the 1997 NFL Draft. Gonzalez was picked as the 13th overall selection by the Kansas City Chiefs. Gonzalez was with the Chiefs between 1997 and 2008. Gonzalez was traded to the Atlanta Falcons. In Gonzalez's second NFL year, he caught no less than 59 passes every season.
